Event Information

Description

Sunday 6/23 Canoe Lake Lesson from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm with Hoofer Outing Club!

Please meet outside the Outdoor UW Office at the Memorial Union at 11:30 am to partake in this lesson! Make sure that if you haven't completed your swim test that you do so during the 11 am swim test with UW Lifesaving lifeguards on the swim pier at the Union.

What to bring: swimwear/clothes you wouldn't mind swimming in, water shoes, sunscreen, a water bottle, and a dry change of clothes for after your lesson in case you end up getting wet!

In this lesson, you will learn the HOC Boathouse and Lake Procedures and Rules and then how to work as a team of 2 in efficiently paddling and steering a tandem canoe. You will learn how to move your canoe forwards, backwards, side ways (draw strokes), and turn the canoe (sweep strokes and J-strokes). If there's time, you might even get the chance to play some paddling games or learn the canoe T-rescue!

By successfully completing this lesson, you will earn the Canoe Lake Rating within the Hoofer Outing Club, giving you the opportunity to go on trips such as a Boundary Waters trip or the Wisconsin River Fall Colors Canoeing trip!

There will be food (probably pizza) available around 1:30 pm at the end of this lesson!
