Event Information

Description
The SK0 sea kayak lesson is your introduction to sea kayaking with the Hoofers Outing Club. Successfully completing this lesson is required to use Hoofer’s sea kayaks on Lake Mendota and to be eligible to participate in quiet water sea kayak trips. To take this lesson you must first have successfully passed the swim test, and successfully completed the kayak lake lesson.

In this lesson you will learn about the club's sea kayaks and equipment, work on forward and sweep strokes, learn the T-rescue (an assisted rescue to get you back in your kayak if you've capsized), and learn about safety concerns for sea kayaking. You will be capsizing the kayak to do a wet exit and spending some time in the water during this lesson.

Wear water sports clothing appropriate for the temperature and water shoes. Dressing in layers (of fleece, wool, or neoprene) is helpful.  Do not wear cotton clothing in the water because it will not keep you warm when wet and also is heavy when wet. The club has a limited number of wet suits available for use. You are welcome to use one if you get cold easily in the water. Water shoes, neoprene booties, or something similar are required to protect your feet. Make sure the shoes you wear for the lesson do not have laces, because they can get caught in the kayak’s foot pegs. Bring along change of dry clothes.

We will meet at the boathouse.  If you sign up and find that you are unable to attend, please remove yourself from the list ASAP so that another member can attend. Failure to attend lessons you are signed up for, or dropping lessons within 24 hours of the start time without notifying your instructor will result in a warning. Repeated drops or missed lessons may result in a suspension of your lesson privileges.
