IMPORTANT NOTE: In addition to your canoe lake lesson, you also need to have taken the swim test to participate in this trip. We are working to offer swim tests at campus pools or in open water sometime this week.
New members and beginning canoers: here's your chance to earn you R1-OC canoeing rating (means you can paddle Class 1 rapids---required to participate in some whitewater trips coming up, and is also a step towards becoming a quietwater canoe trip leader..
We'll be paddling in the outflow of the dam at Prairie du Sac on the Wisconsin River---a short (~half hour) drive from Madison. You'll get your first experience paddling and controlling a tandem canoe in moving, turbulent water. We'll go over basic river skills such as eddy turns, peel outs and ferries paddling both the bow and stern of the canoe. You may also learn how to self rescue after capsizing---righting the canoe and getting back in the boat.
You'll need some kind of footwear that stays on---water shoes or wetsuit booties are best. Sneakers will also work, and sport sandals if they give toe protection. You also will need to bring one of the club's wetsuits and paddle jackets. Underneath you'll need a swimsuit. We also request that you wear some kind of long-john top underneath the wetsuit---some kind of synthetic or wool---NOT COTTON.
Also: a towel, dry change of clothes, sunscreen, and money for gas (~$4) and food. We'll stop at Culver's in Sauk City afterwards for food.
