Event Information

Description
IMPORTANT NOTE: In addition to your lake lesson, you also need to have taken the swim test to participate in this trip. We are working to offer swim tests at campus pools or in open water sometime this week. Come to Tuesday's meeting and we hope to announce such opportunities.

New members and beginning paddlers: here's your chance to earn you R1 kayaker rating (means you can paddle Class 1 rapids---required to participate in the Whitewater Fall Colors trip coming up.

We'll be paddling in the outflow of the dam at Prairie du Sac on the Wisconsin River---a short (~half hour) drive from Madison. You'll get your first experience paddling and controlling your boat in moving, turbulent water. We'll go over basic river skills such as eddy turns, peel outs and ferries. You'll also likely learn how to be rescued after capsizing---either a swimming rescue or righting your boat with assistance (the Eskimo rescue you learned in the lake lesson).

You'll need some kind of footwear---water shoes or wetsuit booties are best. A thin-soled pair of sneakers is 2nd best. Tevas, Chacos and other sports sandals generally won't work. You need something that can fit in the small volume bows of our kayaks. You also will need to bring one of the club's wetsuits and paddle jackets. Underneath you'll need a swimsuit. We also request that you wear some kind of long-john top underneath the wetsuit---some kind of synthetic or wool---NOT COTTON.

Noseplugs also are recommended--the good, solid kind built for paddling (available at Rutabaga). Also: a towel, dry change of clothes, sunscreen, and money for gas (~$4) and food. We'll stop at Culver's in Sauk City afterwards for food.

Since there is a high demand for new members to earn their R1, please reserve these initial sign-ups for such members. If you already have an R1 rating or higher, please wait to sign up. I can make this trip bigger with more drivers and safety boaters/co-river leaders. Contact me if you're in these categories.
