Description
Canoe Clinic Extravaganza on Lake Mendota : Whitewater Skills
canoeist
noun | ca ? noe ? ist | \k? - \nü - \ist

aka “open boater.” Anyone who paddles an open canoe. Tandem canoeists are known for their constant, loud repartee concerning whose fault it was that the boat got flipped. Solo canoeists are well-known for their smug attitudes regarding all decked boaters, particularly kayakers. Recognized by their total lack of fear when swimming in class V water. Usually heard saying “Shit, that’s easy with two blades.”
(definition by William Nealy)

Join us on Saturday, Sept 12 from 4-6 pm at the Hoofer Boat House for a couple of hours of fun and instruction in canoes (a.k.a. real boats).  You will have a chance to learn/practice/refine your whitewater canoe technique in a variety of boats requiring a single bladed paddle (2 blades are not allowed!).  You will be initiated and instructed (with only a little brainwashing) in regards to the joy of paddling a canoe by John and Mary Koeppe.  We have been paddling C2 and C1 for over 30 years including lots of slalom racing experience.
Between Hoofer boats and some of our own boats that we’ll bring, you will have a chance to try out: OC-1, OC-2, Decked C-1, and Decked C-2   We’ll come up with various drills/games to make the practice more varied.  We may also bring buoys (or something) to make a sort of flatwater slalom course and give you something to aim for out on the lake.

Required Ratings
·
All participants must have a canoe or kayak lake lesson and swim test.
In order to try a decked C1 or C2 you must have had a kayak lake lesson and have an R1 rating.

Short Caveat       Some may think that since they only paddle whitewater, they can’t learn much on a lake.  Au contraire!  When Mary and I took a whitewater slalom clinic from two U.S. slalom team members, we spent the first morning practicing on a lake; and we learned a lot.

Caveat #2
We hope some of you kayakers might be interested in coming down and seeing what single-blade paddling is all about.  Many very good slalom kayakers practice slalom gates while only using one blade of their kayak paddle – just to work on the boat lean and control needed to do moves with one blade.

Come on down and join the fun.
