Description
**I accidentally hit the "cancel" function when I was messing around with the settings. Fear not, the trip is NOT cancelled and will go on as planned!**

We're going up to Door County for three days of outdoor fun! We'll drive up Friday evening and camp at Newport State Park on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. Saturday and Sunday will be spent either biking, hiking or paddling (sea kayaking). Monday there's the possibility of stopping at Whitefish Dunes State Park for more paddling and/or hiking if time permits.

Some highlights of the trip may include:
  • Paddle Peninsula State Park or up along the shore of Lake Michigan towards Washington Island (weather permitting). An SK-1 rating is required for all paddlers on this trip - so get your kayak lake lesson, SK0 and SK1 lessons (or trips) in before then!
  • Bike and take the ferry to Washington Island and cycle the island. Very few cars and some great island cycling.
  • Hike (or bike) Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin's most popular state parks with great Lake Michigan views and bluffs.
  • Visit Whitefish Dunes State Park on the way home for more hiking and sea kayaking (SK-1 required for paddlers).
  • Camp in Newport State Park, which has walk-in only sites. There is a beach where we have morning coffee. It is close to Door County's lakeside towns and has tons of hiking going through the campground.
  • Spend time around the campfire, on the beach - all with great people.
The group will leave Friday, September 4th after work (possibly in waves depending on what time folks are available to leave town) and return Monday September 7th around 8pm. The trip cost will be $80. A $50 deposit is required to hold your spot. If you're interested in helping to organize food groups (i.e., use the list I send you to buy food for a group of 4), organize hiking/biking/sea kayaking adventures during the weekend, or organize a "gear-up meeting" Tuesday, Sept. 1st (after the Hoofer meeting) to get gear sorted, please email me at cberezowitz@wisc.edu. Priority sign-ups will go to:
  • Drivers
  • Volunteer leaders (to organize food groups, gear, and/or activities)
  • Sea kayaking leader(s)
  • Dennis (who fronted the $ to reserve the campsite for us this year!)
In order to sign up, please email me (cberezowitz@wisc.edu) and indicate whether you are able to drive, and if so, how many boats, bikes or people you can take (be specific!). Also, if you are able and willing to tow the club trailer, please let me know, you get a free dinner on the way up. Finally, state any food allergies that you might have and whether you plan to bike, hike, or paddle (or some combination thereof). The more drivers we have, the more people can come (final #'s are dependent on drivers). After we get some volunteer drivers, activity leaders, and food/gear organizers, I'll open up any remaining spots for sign-ups.

For the trip itself, you must:
  • Bring money for Friday dinner and Monday's dinner, both of which will be on the road (all other food provided with the cost of the trip);
  • If you want to bike at Washington Island, you will need money for the ferry ($17.50 for a person and a bike);
  • Provide your own bike (or indicate if you need to use a club bike);
  • Bring your own tent. If you don't have one, whoever volunteers to organize gear can hook you up with a club tent.
  • Bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad. The Outing Club has sleeping pads if you need one;
  • Bring your own eating dish, utensils and coffee mug.
Don't miss this awesome weekend...it's one of my favorite annual trips that the club organizes!
