Event Information

Description

Hi everyone, I am putting together a group to volunteer for the Madison Ironman 70.3 on Saturday, September 7th. Here is the description provided for folx interested in volunteering as a safety boater

Swim - Kayak

Kayaks are stationed along the swim course to serve as directional guides for athletes and for safety purposes. Kayaks are often the first responder to an athlete in need of assistance so you must be confident in your ability to keep your kayak upright if an athlete needs to hold on to your boat. If an athlete is in need of further assistance or rescue the kayaker will signal for lifeguards stationed along the course on boats or Jet Ski. You must have your own kayak. Sea or Touring style kayaks are preferred due to their inherent built in flotation.

You will receive a survey from the Kayak Captain to gauge your experience and skill level. Based on your responses the Kayak Captain will determine your position and role on the course.

About two weeks prior to the race, you will be sent training information on how to provide effective kayak support. All swim volunteers are required to attend ONE of two Swim Volunteer Meetings via Zoom.

Kayak/SUP Volunteer Zoom: Tuesday September 3rd at 6:00pm or Thursday September 5th at 6:00pm

Pre-race overnight storage for kayaks is available to make race morning easier.

Requirements include:
· Providing your own equipment: kayak, paddle, PFD, & whistle.
· Are able to attend one of the volunteer meetings.

Here is the tentative schedule

Friday, September 6th

3 – 6pm | Load boats and gear at Memorial Union, drive to Chainwheel Drive & drop boats off at Monona Terrace for overnight storage

Saturday, September 7th

5am | Meet at Monona Terrace

5 – 9am | Paddle and assist with swim course

9 – 10:30am | Load boats and return to Memorial Union

If you want to volunteer, please sign up for the trip and I will send you the link and the group name to register as a volunteer. 5am is pretty dang early so please be honest with yourself and only sign up if you're going to show up (no fault if early mornings aren't your thing).
