Event Information

Description

Pending approval from our Water Safety Chair, I will lead an intermediate whitewater trip to the Black River Falls area this weekend (4/5 - 4/6). We'll meet at 9:30AM Saturday at Park St. Circle/Memorial Union Boathouse to gather gear, and plan on returning to Madison by dinnertime on Sunday (or late Saturday, if water conditions are lousy). To participate in this trip, you'll need an R3p or higher rating with solid cold-water self-rescue skills in your watercraft of choice (canoe or kayak), cold water boating clothing (at minimum, this means a drytop/wetsuit combo or dry suit, fleece to be worn underneath the top, booties, wool or neoprene insulating socks, gloves or pogies), dry bag, food and water, warm dry clothes, sleeping bag+mat, and money for gas ($25/passenger). The Club has the basic paddling equipment (PFDs, boats, spray skirts, helmets, bladders, paddles). Potential runs include the upper Black River (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2741/) or lower Black River from below Lake Arbutus to the Powerhouse (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2700/), Morrison Creek (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/3845/), Halls Creek (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2929/), or Levis Creek (class II-ish, no AW posting). Based on a photo I saw of the ice on Halls Creek last weekend, and the wet/warm-ish weather we've had this week, I'm making an educated guess that the rivers in that region will be open and runnable. When we arrive, we will need to assess each run carefully, and recognize that ice (shelves, jams, -lock) may preclude running some rivers or rapids. If we find conditions favorable and wish to stay until Sunday, we can decide as a group whether to split the cost of a motel room or camp. We can resolve tent space issues when we meet on Saturday morning. Please sign up so I have a head count, an idea of car space, skill levels, and who to contact should the trip needs to be cancelled.
