Canoe Lake Lesson

New to the club?    This lesson, distinct from the Kayak lake lesson, teaches you how to work as a team to make a tandom canoe go where you want it to go and gives you the canoe lake rating you will need to go on canoe outing club quiet water trips or to paddle our canoes on Lake Mendota.  

You do not need the swim test to take this lesson, we will explain what you need to do to get the swim test accomplished.  The swim test will not be offered in this lesson but the swim test is required in order to go on club paddling trips and to take boats out on your own on lake Mendota.

We normally don't capsize or practice rescues in this lesson but it is hard to keep your feet dry in a canoe so wear some kind of footwear that stays on and can get wet.  Wear clothing that is comfortable and can get wet in case of splashing.  

Memorial Union has 25 cent lockers to stash your valuables into during the lesson.

Meet at the entrance to the boathouse which is across from the sguare pier.  You will see Outdoor rental people at the door and canoes and kayaks in the background.

Remove yourself from the signup list if you are unable to attend so that others can sign up in your place.

We will start with learning some basic canoe strokes, practice on the water followed by learning about the flags, steam whistle, rescue service plus more.
