Description

Description: The SK1 is the intermediate class for Sea Kayaks. 

Requirements: Must have SK0 and passed a swim test.

Where: Meet at the Memorial Union boathouse

What will I learn? 

  1. Review draw stroke, sweep stroke and forward stroke
  2. High brace and low brace
  3. Paddle float rescue
  4. Perform T-Rescue within 2 minute on flat water
  5. Will discuss proper skeg use, paddle signals, and practice on-water group spacing to maintain communication
  6. Intermediate turning techniques (Edging)
  7. Will practice the forward stroke with cruising speed of 3 mph on flat water
  8. Develop knowledge for beach launches without the use of a dock

Will spend first half of lesson practicing techniques and the second half paddling.  Lesson may take less time depending on duration of practicing techniques portion of class.

Be aware the forecast calls for increasing wind speeds on Saturday.  High winds make learning and assessment difficult.  We will assess the wind conditions at the start of the lesson and decide then if we need to make adjustments, reschedule or cancel this lesson.

**Bring your own for yourself: 
*Appropriate water shoes that will get wet (no laces that might get caught in your boat, stays on when swimming) - the lakebed is full of pointy things and some glass (no bare feet)
*Glasses strap (if needed)
Wide brim hat to provide shade from the sun
*Sunscreen
*Waterbottle
*Snacks
*Towel
*Change of dry clothing for the end of trip (you will get soaked)
*Plastic bag for your wet stuff
*Appropriate swimwear
***NO COTTON CLOTHING*** should be worn
Again, bring dry clothes to changes into after your lesson
