Event Information

Description

Friday June 15th at 2 pm I will be leading a canoe lake lesson.  This lesson, along with the swim test, is what is needed to go on quiet water outing club canoe trips and to take canoes out on lake Mendota.

This canoe lesson, distinct from the kayak lake lesson, teaches you how to work as a team to make a tandem canoe go where you want it to go.  We normally don't capsize or practice rescues in this lesson but wear shoes that stay on and can get wet, and clothes that can get wet in case of splashing or capsize.  Memorial Union has lockers for 25 cents to use to stow your belongings during the lesson.  We will talk about checking out canoes, the flag system, ratings, the steam whistle, canoe strokes, practice on the water and much more.

The swim test is not part of this lesson but you can stop in at the UW Outdoor rentals counter, let them know that you want to take the swim test and they will give you a form to take to the life guards at the swimming pier.  Once you pass, the lifeguard signs the form, take it back to the Outdoor rental office to have them put your rating into the system.  The lifeguards are there everyday from 11am to sunset.  Arrive at least an hour before sunset because they will not do the test at sunset.

If you cannot make the lesson, as soon as you know, remove yourself from the lesson so others may sign up.

Meet me at the waterfront at the entrance of the boathouse.  You will see the canoes and kayaks from the open door.
