Description

Sea Kayak Saturday Morning - Lake Mendota

The lake is up to 60 degrees so it is time to get paddling!  I will lead a seakayaking trip to Picnic Point and back on Saturday morning. Since this may be the first paddle of the season for many people, we will take a fairly leisurely pace. This will be an opportunity to re-familiarize ourselves with our boats and practice good paddling technique.  While the surface temp will be warm, the water is at 60 degrees, so be sure to dress in clothing which is warm when wet, to layer your clothing so that you can adjust it as needed, and to have a set of dry clothes for when we return. Wet suits will be available for anyone who wants one.   If you start getting hot you can always splash yourself until you cool off.  Also, be sure to bring plenty of water to stay well hydrated.

Route Plan: Leave at 10am from the Hoofer dock, follow the shoreline out to Picnic Point, then straight back to the Hoofer dock from the tip of the point.  Estimated distance: approx. 2.65 miles. Depending on the skill and energy of the group, and how fast we complete the circuit to Picnic Point, we may then paddle along the shore to James Madison park and back; estimated distance: approx. 1.7 miles.  Maximum distance: approx. 4.35 miles. Estimated end-time: 12:30pm.
