Sea Kayak Combo Lesson - June 26, 2018 (Tuesday) 10:00AMĀ 

(Note: If another leader or leader in training would like to assist me, please email me directly.)

Please meet at the triangular pier promptly at 10:00AM. We will review the plan for the day. Please arrive promptly wearing a swimsuit and a layer of warm-when-wet clothing (no cotton) and closed-toe shoes that will stay on your feet when swimming. (You wiill get wet, you will swim, barefoot is *not* allowed.)

Required Ratings: Kayak Lake Rating and Standard Swim Test required.

Required Gear:
Your Own (you must wear/bring with you): swim suit, non-cotton layers (synthetic wickable and/or wool), wool socks, paddling shoes (closed-toe shoes that can get wet and will stay on your feet), towel, and warm/dry change of clothes. 1 liter of water, snacks (e.g., dry fruit, granola bar), sun screen.

Club Gear (you can borrow from club): pfd, wetsuit, spray jacket, boat, paddle, paddle float, pump.

We will use sea kayaks for this Sea Kayak Combo lesson.

In this lesson, we will learn the following.

(a) Boathouse and Lake Procedures and Rules for Sea Kayaks

(b) Construction/Operation of Sea Kayaks

(c) Review of how to efficiently hold the paddle and basic/intermediate paddling strokes to move the boat forwards, backwards, sideways (draw strokes), turning (sweep strokes), how use your hips/thighs to edge the boat to move the boat more efficiently (edging), and how to use your paddle to prevent capsize (bracing).

(d) Review of how to exit the boat safely in the event of capsize (wet exit - you will get wet).

(e) Review of how to upright your boat with assistance from a fellow paddler (the bow rescue - also called the Eskimo rescue).

(f) How to re-enter and empty water out of your boat with assistance from a fellow paddler (The T-rescue)

(g) How to re-enter and empty water out of your boat yourself. (The paddle-float self rescue and the cowboy/scramble)

(h) Depending on the wind, we may likely paddle out towards Picnic Point to enjoy a bit of paddling distance.

Successfully completing this lesson will earn the following ratings.

1. SK0 Rating for Sea Kayak

2. SK1 Rating for Sea Kayak

This lesson will prepare you to enjoy many sea kayak trips.
