Event Information

Description

Our usual canoeing instruction at the UW Memorial Union is on hold for a few weeks until Lake Mendota warms up enough for boating.

However, Monday I can offer an early-season introductory canoe lake lesson on this warm and calm day on the well sheltered Starkweather Creek by Olbich gardens. This canoe lesson, which is different from the kayak lake lesson, covers the basics of working as a team to make a tandem canoe go where you want to go, and gives you the Outing club canoe lake rating needed for going on quietwater trips. Outing club membership required, but no other rating needed to take this lesson. No swim test offered because the water is still too cold.

The lesson is from 2:30PM to 4:45PM Monday. Meet at 2034 Yahara Place, across from the volleyball net, 100 meters NE of the intersection of Russell St and Yahara Place. We will load canoes, paddles and floatation vests and then drive to Starkweather Creek.

I will have canoes, paddles and floatation vests on site. You should wear footgear that you don;t mind getting wet as you step in and out of the canoes.

Potential instructors who want to help out are welcome to join in.  If the time of day is inconvenient, I could do the lesson earlier in the day. or a half hour  later if there are enough people who request that. .
