Beginner Hiking/Camping Trip

Calling all who are new members of the club, and/or are new to camping and backpacking! This is the trip for you!

We would like to lead a trip for individuals who are just being introduced to the activities of Hoofer Outing Club! This is a great way to learn about the club, and gain basic camping and hiking skills such as pitching a tent, cooking on a camp stove, packing a backpack, and taking care of yourself in nature. Along the way we will enjoy some great scenery and fresh air.

JP Martinez, Kelsey Paisley, and I will be leading an overnight camping and hiking trip to Wyalusing State Park from Saturday 9/16 - Sunday 9/17. We will depart Saturday from Memorial Union at approximately 10am and will return to Madison on Sunday evening. Transportation will be included, as will dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.

We will do some short hikes, and will teach valuable outdoor skills such as pitching a tent, cooking in camp, backpacking basics, Leave No Trace principles, and other important skills that are used regularly in the backcountry. This is a great trip to go on if you are new to Hoofers and/or new to outdoor activities - We want to share our knowledge with you!

You will need a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, appropriate clothing for hiking and sleeping in ~50 degree weather, and good hiking boots or tennis shoes. Some sleeping bags are available through Outdoor UW for rental, and some sleeping pads are available for use through Hoofers or for rent through Outdoor UW. You will also need a lightweight backpack to carry while hiking that will allow you to bring at least 1 liter of water, a snack, and extra clothes along.

HOW TO SIGN UP:

In order to give everybody a chance to read this event posting, sign up will not open until 5:00PM on SUNDAY 9/10. At or after this time, please use Venmo to send the trip fee of $50 to Taylor Marohl (Venmo username: @TaylorMarohl). Payments submitted before 5pm tomorrow will not be accepted (this is for fairness to all interested participants). There are 7 participant spots on this trip - the first 7 people to submit the trip payment will join the trip. If more than 7 people submit a payment, I will return it via Venmo promptly.
