Want to get in an extended-weekend backpacking trip through awesome scenery before school starts? If so, this is the trip for you! We will be spending 4 days and 3 nights backpacking in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the coast of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Itinerary:
Sep. 1: Drive from Madison to Pictured Rocks. Leave ~8:00AM, arrive ~3:00PM.
Park at the Little Beaver Trailhead. Hike ~2.2 miles to the Coves individual campsite.
Points of interest: Beaver lake, Lake Superior and possibly Spray Falls.
Sep 2: Hike from Coves to Mosquito River individual campsite (~8.7 miles)
Note: This day will be busy.
Points of interest: Chapel Rock, Grand Portal Point, Spray Falls and lots of pictured rocks!
Sep 3: Hike from Mosquito River to Chapel Beach individual campsite (~4.5 - 5.5 miles, depending on how much the the group wants to hike).
Points of interest: Mosquito Falls, Chapel Lake, Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock and Chapel Rock Beach!
Sep 4: Hike from Chapel Beach to the Little Beaver Trailhead (~6 miles), then drive back to Madison, returning at around 9:00 PM.
Points of interest: Beaver lake, Spray Falls and the last views of Lake Superior!
This is a Ground-level 3 (G3) trip. No ratings are required, but prior camping experience is recommended. Priority sign-up will be given to participants who have cars or are fleet certified, or to those who have not gone on a G3 backpacking trip with Hoofers before.
If we end up using Fleet Vehicles, it would be awesome to have as many people certified to drive them as possible. Here is a link for the certification process: http://www.hooferleaders.org/fleet-vehicle-training-usage. You can also talk to the folks at the Outdoor UW office about how to get certified.
The trip deposit will be $115. That includes fleet rental, food, and permits. However, if we can find 6 spots in personal vehicles, the cost will drop to $80. We’ll send out information about payment after people fill out the survey at the top of the page. The group size will be 6 total: 2 leaders and 4 participants. We would like to have the group finalized and have all money collected by Sunday, August 20th.
Important gear: Backpacking backpack and a warm sleeping bag (both can be rented from Outdoor UW), Sleeping pad (Hoofers likely has some that you can use; can also be rented from Outdoor UW), broken-in Hiking boots or hiking shoes and warm clothes (temperatures can get lower at night).
