Normally we have to bring the boats back by sunset, unless part of an official trip. I obtained water safety approval for a moonlight canoeing and kayaking trip on Lake Mendota Friday evening, which is predicted to be fairly calm and clear. This gives a a great opportunity to paddle out on Lake Mendota away from city lights to picnic point and watch the sun set, daylight fade, perhaps see an apparition of Mercury, and admire Jupiter shining bright. Then we will round the point and return to the lights of the Union terrace reflecting over the shimmering water. Canoers will need a canoe lake rating, sea kayakers a SK0 rating, and ww boaters a R2 rating. You also NEED TO BRING A FLASHLIGHT for your end of the canoe, or two lights and a headlamp if you kayak, so the other boats can see us. Snacks and evening stories to share are optional but welcome. Co-leaders also welcome. Meet by our canoes at the Memorial Union. Kayakers might want to come a few minutes before 7PM to set up your kayak with sprayskirt and hatch covers. Most likely we will stay on the lake; if we land at picnic point, we will go jogging so we don't get eaten by mosquitos.
