Description

Apostle Islands Sea Kayak - July 27-30, 2017

This is an awesome opportunity to improve your paddling skills and enjoy one of the best kayaking spots in the Great Lakes (in the world).

Rating: SK1 rating and completed standard swim test are required. You are also required to paddle with me and to practice rescue techniques together before our departure. No exceptions.

Signup/Details: Please e-mail me to be on the waiting list. Please specify how many people total you can transport (including yourself), how many sea kayaks total you can transport, and what medical issues and medications you have to help ensure your safety.

Camping: We will be camping at Little Sand Bay on the shore of Lake Superior and taking day trips to the  Meyers Beach caves, the Sand Island caves, viewing submerged shipwrecks, and more.

Drybags: If you don't have drybags this is the time to get them.  Essential to keep your food and clothing dry. (REI and Rutabaga have drybags.)

Cost: Approximately $120. This will be put toward gas, camping reservations, and boat use fee. If any money is left over after expenses are paid this will be distributed to everyone equally.

Campsite: Bathrooms, showers, and water are available on site.  Hint: Bring roll of quarters for showers (~$2/shower).

Tents: If you have a tent you are willing to share with someone, please bring it.  We will have 2 campsites at Little Sand Bay and can fit a max of 3 tents per site.

Food: You will need to bring your own food for:
+3 lunches (Fri/Sat/Sun)
+3 breakfasts (Fri/Sat/Sun)
+3 dinners (Thu/Fri/Sat)

Lunches: Pack a lunch each day that can be eaten on the water. (Packed in a drybag) You can buy Thursday lunch during the drive up and Sunday dinner during the drive back.

Stove: We will have a stove at breakfast and dinner with hot water for coffee, oatmeal, pasta etc. Things where you just heat or add boiled water work best.  Woodmens has all kinds of great stuff that you just add water and doesn't need refrigeration. Feel free to bring your own stove if you want to cook your own food at night.

Cooler: If you want to bring or share a cooler feel free, it just needs to fit in one of the cars going up.

Meet: We will depart at 7:00am sharp from the Memorial Union boathouse on Thursday morning July 27.

Arrival: We will arrive to Little Sand Bay in the afternoon, set up camp, and hopefully paddle a bit before sunset.

Schedule: We will paddle on Friday and Saturday, and a bit on Sunday morning.

Return: We will return to Madison on Sunday night.

Wet suit and helmet required for sea kayak (available through the club).
