Event Information

Description
Pending water safety committee approval, I will lead a sea kayak trip to the Apostle Islands from Sunday, Aug. 23 to Wed., Aug. 26.

The Apostle Islands archipelago includes 22 islands and is located in far northwestern Wisconsin, off the Bayfield Peninsula of Lake Superior.  Twenty-one of these islands, and a 12-mile segment along the shore of Wisconsin’s north coast, comprise the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.  It’s part of our National Park System.  Lake Superior is the largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes, also renowned for its cold waters and unpredictable weather.

We will spend four days kayaking among the inner tier of islands, exploring sea caves, and generally enjoying one of the best sea kayaking destinations on the Great Lakes.  We will camp on the mainland at Little Sand Bay and depending on availability of permits also camp on Sand, York, or Oak Islands.

This trip will be open to people with an SK1 rating and above, who have some experience paddling longer distances and in conditions.  You will need to paddle with me before the trip to demonstrate that you have the appropriate speed and endurance, experience with some wind and waves, to practice rescues, etc.  You will also need to be comfortable paddling approx. 6 - 12 miles each day at 3+ mph in waves up to 3 feet.

Bring your own backpacking style tent and camping gear, or let me know if you will need to use club camping gear.  Bring your own meals.  We will meet before the trip to discuss any questions you may have and to review all logistics, such as food ideas that work well plus all of the kayak and camping gear needed for the trip.
Please let me know if you can drive and how many kayaks you can haul.  Final number of participants will be based on the number of drivers that can also haul kayaks and gear.  A $40 deposit is required to confirm your spot.  The money goes towards our camping fees and drivers’ costs.
