Event Information

Description
Week of Instruction: here's another class for those of you already with some experience on whitewater. This class will focus on improving your paddle strokes, bracing, body position and other fundamental skills. In the lake lesson we cover a lot in a short time---and for most people this is their first time learning any of these basic skills. There just isn't time to focus, practice and refine them.

Learning the body mechanics and skills for basic strokes will give you greater power, control and efficiency---all important to increase your paddling enjoyment and endurance. Mastering braces will both help keep you upright--and when upside down, help your rolling ability.

We also could work on some basic playboating skills since they really are closely tied to down-river river skills. It all will depend on the interest of participants. If you want to work on playboating, be sure to use a playboat for the class. Else general river runners (longer, more voluminous boats like the Mambas) will be fine.

I will tailor the class to the skills and interests, so it will be a little freeform. This is a great class to entertain the Union Terrace crowd since most of us will be capsizing frequently. Because of that---knowing how to roll would be especially helpful---especially for playboating.

However, you NEED NOT know how to roll to take this class---you can still be challenged and learn a lot without pushing the edge too far. And I especially encourage existing and future instructors to participate---both to contribute and to learn (we all can improve). We can go over some teaching strategies, too.

Should be a lot of fun. And after the class, those of you interested could hang out after drying out and enjoy food and beverages on the Terrace.
