Event Information

Description
It's Week of Instruction! Here's a class for those of you wanting to learn this fundamental maneuver for whitewater and sea kayaking. We will cover the basic skills you need to be able to roll a kayak--hip snaps and bracing. Most people will take a few sessions to get their first roll--but this will get you started and I'll emphasize drills and skills you can practice later on your own or with a partner.

You must have taken a kayak lake lesson and passed the swim test requirements to take this class. Clearly we will be getting wet so dress accordingly (footwear required). Do yourself a favor and buy a good set of noseplugs (best place is Rutabaga) and put them on a neck cord so you don't lose them. Some people also find that wearing swim goggles or a diving mask helps by being able to see clearly underwater (and a diving mask also works like a noseplug to keep water out of your nose).

We use whitewater kayaks for this class even if you are a sea kayaker. Get a boat that fits you well.

I could use some help from other instructors and assistants (anyone who can roll and is interested in learning how to teach the roll).

Do watch for water quality updates since there have been some beach/swimming closures on the Madison lakes. We would have to cancel if such an advisory would go into effect for the Union part of Lake Mendota.
