Event Information

Description
A kayak lake lesson is the first lesson for Hoofers who want to try sea kayaking or whitewater kayaking. It covers the club rules for using Hoofer Outing Club kayaks on Lake Mendota, and introduces you to the strokes you need to maneuver a kayak, an assisted rescue, and wet exit. You will get thoroughly wet, so dress to get wet. At the conclusion of the lesson, I'll offer swim tests so that you are ready to take other lessons or practice kayaking in the area in front of the union.

Dress to get wet - but that doesn't mean just a swim suit. Try to wear some kind of a shirt that keeps you a little warm, and some quick-dry shorts and any kind of a water shoe you have. Shoes are required - there's lots of abandoned fishing hooks in that there lake and you will be out of your boat and in the water.

If you want to take the club's swim test,  you will need to wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt and shoes.  Be smart - bring quick dry clothing like nylon running pants or a synthetic top. DO NOT WEAR COTTON - it absorbs LOTS of water and is so heavy that even a good swimmer can fail the test. You will swim 50 yards in 3 minutes or less, then tread water to a total of 5 minutes. When you are done with that swim test, you will love PFDs (aka life jackets).

I could use an assistant to help demonstrate assisted rescues, so anyone who already took a lake lesson is welcome to come down and help, as is anyone - an R1, R2 or other water leader. If I get enough help, I'll open up a few more spots in the lesson.

Bring some clothes to change into at the end of the lesson - you may well be cold at the end of a lesson and swim test.
See you tomorrow. Meet in the boathouse. I will help you find a boat, paddle and PFD. Please be on time!
