Event Information

Description
At the April 21st meeting, I will present information on the Ice Age Trail (IAT), a national scenic trail being built entirely within the state of WI. When completed, the trail will be around 1100 miles long. There are currently about 700 miles of trail, and every year, more miles are built. The trail began years ago as a gift from the citizens of Wisconsin to the US, but is now part of the National Park Service.

Hoofers have been active in building the Ice Age Trail for about ten years. There are many ways to help build the trail, and I'll discuss the possibilities that might interest current Hoofer Outing Club members. Let's just say that any student who uses his/her initiative could use this as a springboard to a rewarding career, or as a rewarding opportunity to perform community service in a fun, outdoors atmosphere. The choice is yours.

Historically, Hoofers have preferred to participate in Mobile Skills Crew (MSC) events (which I'll describe at the meeting), and the MSC season begins later this month and extends through October.  It seems like a long way off, but with final exams coming sooner than you think (sorry to remind you all!) and summer break, when most of the students leave town, most of you may not have an opportunity to try trailbuilding until fall. I want you to know what your options are ahead of time, so that you can plan to go to the September and October MSC events. The dates are September 18-20 at Rib Lake in northern WI, and Oct 16-18 at Hartman Creek, in central WI. I will post sign ups on the website for these dates later in the spring.

It would be great if some of you Hoofs who are younger underclassmen and will be returning to UW in the fall can come learn about trail building. I'd love to have you join us on the fall trips. Hopefully, some of the students who are veteran trail builders (you know who you are) can also attend and contribute to the discussion, and volunteer to lead MSC event trips during the summer, when I cannot.

The cost of participating is negligible. The Ice Age Trail Alliance provides camping and great hot meals at MSC events, and the club is going to allow us to use money from the community service budget to pay for gas, so the cost of attending MSC events will now only cost you your meals on the road. Yeah Club, and a hearty thanks to the Exec Board and the powers that be!

Hope to see people next Tuesday in the Hoofer lounge at the union (on the lakeshore for those of you who've never made it to a meeting), and more importantly, on a future trail building trip.

No sign up for this meeting, just show up at the lounge.
