Event Information

Description
Hello Boaters (and wannabe boaters) ((and others with a specific interest in water safety))!

It is that time of year again- the time of year where we gather on the banks of the Wolf and learn about what to do and not do while leading Hoofer trips and venturing out into the world in the ridiculous plastic vessels we know and love (or tolerate. or curse.).

Ready to up your whitewater game? Want to lead other people on the river? Want to lead your own Shred the Red? Want to practice for the Ottawa Swim Team?

Gotta learn some safety first, guys. And this is the time and place to learn! Topics we will go over include but are not limited to...

- How to deal with multiple first-time boaters riding the struggle bus down Boy Scout Rapid
- What those ropes really for
- What to do when you flip over and swim to avoid getting intimate with trees and rocks, or your foot trapped on the bottom of the river
- People skills, kind of.

Bonus: Pizza.

See schedule and details below.

All present and future whitewater paddling leaders are encouraged to participate in this annual weekend of river safety, rescue and leadership training.

Schedule:
Day 1: Swiftwater Rescue clinic with Scott Berry. You'll get to swim rapids on purpose, practice rope rescues, wade in rapids and scramble over a simulated strainer. Afterward, consume large amounts of delicious pizza at the Bear Paw.
Day 2: Leadership clinic on Wolf III or Red. We'll set-up, discuss and run typical river situations encountered in the club.

Our emphasis is safety. To participate you must have an R2 paddler rating and have taken the water safety test (contact Dan York for details; it's a written test). We'll leave after work (~5 pm) on Friday and travel north to camp at the Bear Paw. We'll return to Madison Sunday night. Costs will be gas and food (~$50-70). The club covers the cost of instruction and camping. This is a great opportunity to learn and practice essential rescue skills.

To sign up for real, please talk to Eric or Caitlyn. Sign up here to hold a spot and get on the email list for more information.
