Event Information

Description
Learning the skills to brace and roll a kayak is critical for both whitewater and sea kayakers. At this Sunday's pool session I'll be leading a rolling class for interested paddlers. The prerequisite is to have taken the lake lesson.

You must sign up for the pool session separately! See the events calendar for details on how to do this (it also requires a fee to cover the pool costs). This sign-up is just to give me an idea of how many people wish to work on this skill with me and other club instructors.

Also, we plan to have an optional video session beginning at noon (see "Today in the Union" for exact room---likely Mendota Lounge, but not guaranteed) to watch some instructional videos, which many people find really helpful since kayak rolling is not at all intuitive. This video session is open to all interested paddlers.

See the event description of the pool session as to items to bring (I'll just emphasize that for learning to roll you REALLY will benefit from having and using NOSEPLUGS. Get some good ones designed for paddling from Rutabaga. Else wearing a skin/Scuba mask that keeps water from going up your nose also is a good option---and this gives you visual assistance as well.

Also please grab a PFD (life vest) for use if you are taking this lesson. Helps you---helps us instructors.

Finally, learning to roll is a process---not one-time event. In the short time we have we'll get you started, but to really learn and master the roll will generally take several sessions. So start now---by the end of our rolling sessions you'll be all set for the next step---rolling in whitewater! (Or surf or open water).
