Event Information

Description
Saturday is supposed to get above freezing and have mild 5-15 mph SW wind, so it will be a rare opportunity to do some outdoor paddling at a safe but rather unusual location, while also looking out for the interesting bird life stopping by on the way south (such as cranes, coots, ducks, geese, comorants). Lake Columbia, near Poynette, 30km N of Madison is heated to >75F by 900MW of waste heat from a coal power plant on its N shore, so it is a safe place to paddle in the cold season, and hunting is banned in the area (a bullet hole in a multi-MW pressurized steam heat exchanger would be a big problem!).  Canoers will need a canoe lake rating and passed the swim test, and also need to wear warm when damp clothes to keep you warm in the cold fog and wind. It would be good to have extra clothes to change into, which we can put into dry bags.  Kayakers need a SK0 or R2,and will need to wear a wet suit and paddle jacket to protect against the wind and cold fog and warm wave splash. The club has canoes, kayaks, wet suits and paddle jackets.. Meet 11AM Sat at N end of Park St by the Memorial Union.
