New Glarus Oktoberfest Bike Ride

Hey Hoofers, 

Let's bike to New Glarus, WI and check out the Oktoberfest festivities. This will be a day trip. We will leave at 9:30 am from the Memorial Union and should return by 8 or 9 in the evening. The route is approximately 55 miles round trip and is mostly on paved and gravel trails. The majority of the route is flat but there are some hills as you approach New Glarus. 

Once we are in New Glarus we can check out the town, tour the brewery, and join in on the Oktoberfest celebration. Oktoberfest activities/attractions include: live music, polka dancing, big cheese fondue pot, wagon rides, chainsaw carving, and New Glarus beer. The schedule of events for Saturday is as follows:

10am - 4pm - self guided New Glarus Brewery tours (the tasting room is open too)

11am - 3pm - chainsaw wood carving. 

12pm - 3pm - music by the Max Drexler Bavarian Brass Band

2pm - garden tractor pull

4pm - 7pm - music by Wheelhouse 

Other details: Make sure to bring a helmet, plenty of water, bike lights, a bike lock, an extra tube if you are able (I will bring a patch kit and a pump that fits presta valves) and an ID if you plan to do any beer tasting or drinking. Bring money for lunch and/or dinner. There are plenty of restaurants in town and there will be food for sale as part of the festival. Alternatively, you can bring snacks and food for the day with you. You will also need a state trail pass that you can pick up along the way. $4/day or $20 for a 2014 pass. 

If you need a bike please let me know well in advance. I believe the club may have one or two but we may need to do some tuning and make sure it fits you.
