Event Information

Description
Water safety approval pending, I’m planning a sea kayaking trip to the Apostle Islands for Aug 21-24.  This is an awesome opportunity to improve your paddling skills and see one of the best kayaking spots in the Great Lakes. We will be camping at Little Sand Bay on the shores of Lake Superior and taking day trips away from our base camp.  If the weather cooperates, we will make it out to some of the sea caves on Sand Island or along the mainland.   This trip will only require an SK1 rating
Below is a suggested gear list for a trip to the Apostles.  If you don't have drybags this is the time to get them.  Essential to keep your food dry.  (REI and Rutabaga have them)

Wetsuits are required.  You will use a club one if  you need one.

Food: You will need to bring your own breakfast and lunch and dinner.  To keep things simple we won't be providing food on this trip.  We will have a stove at breakfast and dinner with hot water for coffee, oatmeal, pasta etc. Things where you just heat or add boiled water work best.  Woodmens has all kinds of great stuff that you just add water and doesn't need refrigeration.  If you want to bring a cooler feel free, it just needs to fit in one of the cars going up (best if your willing to share space with people).  Pack a lunch that can be eaten on that water.  You'll need breakfast Friday/Saturday/Sunday, and Lunch Friday/Saturday/Sunday.  Dinner for Thursday, Friday, Saturday.  You can buy Thursday lunch during the drive up.  If you have your own CAMP STOVE it couldn't hurt to bring it, if you want to cook your own food at night.

Cost: The cost of this trip will be $80.  (I posted higher on the calendar but that is an overestimate)  This will be put toward gas/camping reservations.  You will be required to pay the amount before Aug 21st.  If any money is left over after expenses are paid this will be distributed to everyone equally.  An expense report is whown to everyone.

Tents: If you have a tent you are willing to share with someone, please bring it.  We have 2 campsites at Little Sand Bay and can fit max of 3/site.

Campsite: Bathrooms, showers, water pumps are available on site.  Hint: Bring roll of quarters for showers (~$2/shower).

Note: I and Susan Tesarik are the 2 leaders involved with this trip.  I won't be able to attend the actual trip and Susan will be leading.  But I will be involved with organizing.  We will both by on the Isle Royale trip from Aug 2-13 and will be out of touch email-wise.  If you have questions get them to me before Aug 1st or wait til I get back.

Gear List
Best Advice: Dress in layers! Shirt under wetsuit, then wetuit, then paddle jacket.  Add wool sweater or base layers if its extra cold.   Gear for Paddling: -quick-drying shirt for underneath your dry suit.  (just be sure it’s not cotton).  May want more than 1 for clothes often don’t dry overnight.  -wetsuit (this can go over your swimsuit, but is sleevless so that’s why you do want a shirt to wear under the wetsuit) -swimsuit -wool outer layer (ex. Sweater, fleece jacket) -paddling jacket (a windbreaker can work, warmest if placed over wool sweater) -paddling shoes (NO LACES!) -sunglasses w/ strap -sunscreen -hat -2 1-liter water bottles -Dry Bags!  At least one for putting your lunch in during the day trips.    At campsite:  (average temperature is 70 deg in day, 50s at night.  Be prepared for rain). There are showers and bathrooms at the campsite. -sleeping bag/pillow -if you need a ground pad the club can loan one -rain jacket/pants -bugspray -bowel, cup, spoon, fork -warm dry clothes to change into while get off water -extra land shoes -warm clothes if weather gets cold (No cotton!) -Warm socks -toothbrush etc.    Food: 3 lunches, 3 breakfast, 3 dinners (have a drybag for your lunch
